Evans House
Within Canada and elsewhere, there is a growing interest in alternative building methods to reduce our impact on the environment. Green Planet Homes is an alternative home building company owned and operated by Shawn Hayter. We provide an option for this growing, eco-friendly segment of the Canadian market.
Green Planet Homes is based in the tiny hamlet of McCord in south western Saskatchewan near the Grasslands National Park. We have been involved in projects from Northern Ontario and throughout western Canada. Green Panels, our prefabricated straw bale panels are manufactured indoors at our McCord location. The panels are then shipped to the homeowners building site and assembled. We also offer consultation services for owner build projects and do limited on site builds.
Green Planet Homes is based in Western Canada. Our homes are built using straw bales and other natural building materials. Green Planet Homes is a member of the OSBBC (Ontario Straw Bale Building Coalition) and part of the Harvest Homes family of builders.

Shawn Hayter is the owner and operator of Green Planet Homes.
After several years as a Network Technologist Shawn began to long for tangible results from his work. He also became more aware of the effect we are all having on the planet and what we can do to reduce our impact on it in our daily lives.
In 2000 Shawn combined his love for building and working out of doors, his newfound environmental interests. He started Green Planet Homes, an ecologically sustainable business.
Shawn's experience in straw bale construction began in the summer of 2002 when he volunteered at an owner-build straw bale job site during various stages of the build. The project was, at the time, and may still be the largest load bearing straw bale building in North America.
Shawn began apprenticing under Ben Polley of Harvest Homes in January of 2003. During his time with Ben, Shawn gained experience in load bearing, infill and modified post and beam styles of straw bale construction. Shawn was involved in eight different projects as part of Harvest Homes including managing a 3000 sqft project for Harvest Homes in Oakville Ontario. Since leaving Harvest Homes and starting Green Planet Homes Shawn has continued to be active in the straw bale construction industry, having built consulted or plastered several different projects mainly in Western Canada.
Shawn is currently serving as a Director on the board of the Ontario Straw Bale Building Coalition (OSBBC). The OSBBC works to promote straw bale construction and educate the public about its safety, strength and enviromental benefits. They also speak with building officials, banks and insurance companys on behalf of owners and builders, working to satisfy any concerns they may have.
